After working in the shipyards for many years, John Kerr made the choice to move into a career in mental health, where he spent 15 years as manager for a mental health voluntary organisation in Glasgow.
Having enjoyed his time working in psychiatry and having met so many fantastic and resilient people, he eventually retired, but this wouldn't be the end of his career.
John later decided to come out of retirement due to family health issues, and started a part-time role as a support worker at Blue’s Triangle’s Millhill service in East Lothian.“I had never been involved in supporting homeless young people and this was the main motivator for applying for this job," explained John."It was a new challenge.
At that time, I was ready to start fostering teenagers. Sadly, I had to give this up due to family health issues. So, working with young people was always on my radar and I decided to go for it.”Blue Triangle’s Millhill service provides supported accommodation for young people who are experiencing homelessness and require support to prepare them for independent living.
