Young Scots will be urged to think twice and stop sharing violent footage on social media under a new national campaign. Quit Fighting For Likes aims to get youngsters to consider their attitudes towards the filming of fights on smartphones. It follows an explosion in the number of videos uploaded to platforms like TikTok and YouTube of kids involved in brutal acts of violence, with many clips filmed by other pupils on school grounds.

The harrowing footage is often viewed thousands of times before the videos are finally removed from websites, causing further pain for victims. The new initiative, which launches today, is backed by the Scottish Government and has been developed by experts at the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit.

It follows the Daily Record's long-running Our Kids... Our Future campaign, which has called for tech giants like Instagram to crackdown on the amount of violent videos shared on their platforms. We previously told how the mum of an autistic teen who was lured into a park and battered hit out at the social media giant after it failed to remove a violent clip of the attack.

The video has been tormenting 13-year-old Abbie Jarvis since she was brutally assaulted on October 4, 2022.The footage shows Abbie, who was 12 at the time, being kicked on the head and in the body after she was lured to the skatepark in the Drumchapel area of Glasgow and set upon by a girl she thought was her friend.Speaking to the Record about the new initiative, Abbie's mum Angela said: "I think this is great, the more people on board in addressing this issue the better, and I'm delighted that groups have taken this action.
