Young mum who lost leg in 81mph BMW hit-and-run gets 'justice' as driver jailed

A young Scots mum whose leg was instantly amputated after a hit-and-run driver mowed her down finally got "justice" when he was jailed today.

Kerrie Lavery, 25, from Drumchapel, suffered the life-changing injury after being struck by Thomas Granger at 81mph as he tore into her in his BMW near Clydebank, Dunbartonshire, on October 2, 2021.

The impact was so severe the mum-of-one suffered an immediate above-the-knee amputation and was confined to a wheelchair as she endured gruelling surgery and physio treatments.Her friend Alanah Boyle, 29, also suffered a fractured pelvis as she was struck while walking arm-in-arm with Kerrie.Granger was jailed on Friday for 33 months at Dumbarton Sheriff Court for what was branded by a sheriff as a “disgraceful” crime.Kerrie, who is bravely continuing life with a prosthetic, said: “I can’t pretend the collision didn’t have a profound impact on my life because it did.“No one expects to suffer an injury like this but I’ve really tried to do my best to stay positive and keep leading as normal a life as possible because I really believe that ‘life-changing’ doesn’t have to mean ‘life-ending’.“I don’t really know what to say about the driver… he got more jail time than I expected so that’s something.“I’m not a bitter or vengeful person but I think it is right that he is held accountable as everything that happened around this incident sends a really strong message to people about road safety and justice so it’s important that it has, I guess, an appropriate ending."Kerrie had left a mental health charity event around midnight with friends on the night she was hit and after they failed to find a taxi they decided to walk home.
