Health authorities in the Canary Islands have issued ‘high risk’ alerts for the holiday destination as temperatures soar this week.

A red alert, indicating a ‘high risk’ to health, is in place for Santa Lucía de Tirajana and San Bartolomé de Tirajana in Gran Canaria until August 22.

An orange ‘medium risk’ alert has been issued for Mogán in Gran Canaria while a yellow ‘low risk’ alert is in place for Tejeda on the island.

A yellow warning has also been issued for Candelaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife until August 21. The alerts, issued by the General Directorate of Public Health for the Canary Islands, were triggered when forecasts published by Spain’s national weather agency Aemet 'exceeded the threshold for risk warnings’.
