Met Office issues ‘severe’ thunderstorm alert and warns of 'frequent lightning strikes'

A yellow severe thunderstorm warning is in force today (Sunday, September 1) for large parts of the UK. The Met Office warning was issued at 4am today and is in place until midnight.

The Met Office warns that it “may cause flooding and disruption” on Sunday, with heavy showers and thunderstorms expected to move north across England, into parts of Wales and later in Scotland.

The warning covers nearly all of England, including the East Midlands, parts of East of England, areas of London and South East England, North East England, North West England, areas of South West England, the West Midlands and areas of Yorkshire and Humber.

It also covers parts of South West Scotland and the Lothian Borders, areas of Strathclyde, and parts of Wales. People are warned of ‘difficult driving conditions’ and potentially road closures, as well as the possibility of delays and cancellations to public transport.
