A heartbroken victim has demanded puppy farmers who made a fortune selling dying and mistreated dogs should be jailed.Brothers Tom and William Mongan were part of a gang who flooded Scotland with pups, causing “unspeakable cruelty” and bringing untold misery for many families. The Record can reveal that Tom Mongan, 28, was sentenced in May in Northern Ireland for similar offences – receiving a 10-year ban from keeping animals, and community service. He and William, 39, admitted further charges at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week.
They were charged after we published heartbreaking revelations on dead and dying pups that led to a probe by the Scottish SPCA’s Special Investigations Unit. The court heard the number of dogs involved is possibly into double figures – but it is believed the Mongans sold hundreds of dogs and may have made more than £1million from the trade. The Record told in March 2021 how the gang from the Dunmurry Estate, Belfast, rented Airbnb properties in Scotland, which they used to present as their own homes, giving innocent customers a false sense of security.Sophie Jones Gerrard, 28, told how her life was turned upside down after she bought dying pup Freya for £1500, in early 2021.
Tiny Freya died within days, causing huge anguish and a £500 vet bill as Sophie tried to save her life.Sophie, from Kilwinning, said: “Freya was sold as a beagle but she just did not look anything like that and we suspect she was a Jack Russell cross.
The pain I suffered when she died is hard to overstate, as I formed an immediate bond.“I tried so hard to save Freya’s life and she was fed with a syringe for 10 days but it all ended very badly and she died in my arms at 3am.“All she had wanted to do was cuddle in close.
