An SNP MP has warned that veterans are being "failed" by strict UK drug laws which hamper efforts to treat conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).Owen Thompson, the party's armed forces spokesman, said there was growing research that banned substances like magic mushrooms could help treat conditions such as depression and anxiety disorders. The Midlothian MP said archaic laws hindered medical studies into the use of psilocybin – the active ingredient in magic mushrooms.
Drug laws are reserved to Westminster and the Tory Government has rebuffed previous calls for a different approach to be taken in Scotland.Psilocybin – a naturally occurring substance whose effects lasts for a number of hours – is still categorised as Schedule 1 like crack cocaine and heroin.Thompson said: "Psilocybin can save lives.
People have been using it in one form or another for thousands of years. There is a vast body of research evidence which shows this is safe and incredibly effective."Yet in the UK we are still so far behind on this.
Psilocybin has already proved to be a lifeline to traumatised veterans seeking a suitable form of treatment."The law needs to be changed urgently.
