Holidaymakers staying in Gran Canaria are warned that they could receive an alert on their mobile phones next week as the government plans to test its emergency warning system.
The exercise will be carried out on Thursday, September 26 between 10am and 12pm local time. Although it will be carried out in Gran Canaria, authorities have said that people in Tenerife and Fuerteventura could receive the alert as well due to the range of mobile phone antennas.
The system, called ES-Alert, has previously been tested in the other Canary Islands of Fuerteventura, El Hierro, La Palma, Lanzarote and La Gomera.
According to the Canary Islands Government, most mobile phones with a data connection will have the ability to receive the civil protection alert, with devices operating Android version 11 or higher, or iOS version 15.6 or higher having the option activated by default.
