Tourism plan promising 'bold new approach' in Renfrewshire given green light by councillors

A new tourism plan, which has promised a “bold new approach” in Renfrewshire has been approved by elected members. The strategy sets out the local authority’s vision and priorities for the visitor economy between 2024 and 2027.

The document – described as “excellent” by the opposition leader – was given the green light at Wednesday’s leadership board.

An industry-led tourism leadership group will be created to oversee and drive delivery of identified actions in the plan. According to the paper, entitled Renfrewshire’s Tourism Today, the sector’s importance to Renfrewshire lies in more than 6,000 jobs and 400 businesses, with a value of £120 million each year.“The tourism plan is for everyone in tourism and hospitality, not just the public sector,” it said. “Successful destinations can only succeed if stakeholders are fully immersed in planning and taking action – in marketing, product development and communication.”The vision focuses on a new “mindset” and bold “approach” to tourism, putting communities, people, visitors, businesses and the environment at its heart.

Meanwhile, the priorities centre on tourism industry collaboration, building on Paisley’s strengths as a destination and gateway to the wider area, growing opportunities in rural Renfrewshire and seeking out opportunities in business tourism.Councillor Iain McMillan, Labour group leader and representative for Johnstone South and Elderslie, said: “I would like to commend this report.
