Fantasia Barrino is opening up about the challenges she faced following her win on American Idol. The star of The Color Purple revealed in a recent interview that the years after being crowned the winner of season three of the singing competition were difficult for her financially. “It wasn’t easy,” Barrino told People in an interview. “I lost a lot.

The singer and actress said that her difficulties were in part due to her being “very, very green” in the industry after winning the talent show and being launched into stardom. “You have to become a businesswoman and you link up with great business partners, but it doesn’t have a lot to do with love.
