The Mancunian Way: 6,000 flats, not one of them affordable

A dog spa, a Mahjong room, and a creators’ studio. They’re just some of the amenities Manchester city centre’s latest batch of skyscrapers can boast.

But there’s one thing they don’t include. The five tower blocks next to Deansgate Square, set to be built by the developer Renaker, will contain almost 2,400 flats.

But not a single one of them will be affordable. And it’s a similar story just over the Irwell. There, Henley Investments plans to demolish Regent Road Retail Park and build 10 towers containing 3,300 apartments.

Again not a single one will be affordable. Back in May, the M.E.N. reported how 17,000 people are on Manchester's waiting list for social housing, while in Salford the figure is 5,000.
