A by-election to replace a Manchester councillor who resigned amid rumours she lives 200 miles away will be taking place this week.
Julia Baker Smith stood down as a Labour councillor representing Brooklands ward in July. She resigned with 'immediate effect' due to the 'serious illness of a close family member' who is living on the Isle of Wight.
A new councillor will be elected to represent the ward in Wythenshawe on Thursday (September 7). Among the candidates standing in the by-election is a former Bournemouth councillor who stood for the seat last year while still representing residents more than 250 miles away.
Conservative candidate Norman Decent, who moved to Manchester during the pandemic, is no longer a Kinson councillor. Try MEN Premium for FREE by clicking here for no ads, fun puzzles and brilliant new features. He will be standing as a Trafford council candidate next year.
