Universities contribute almost £5billion to Greater Manchester's economy and support tens of thousands of jobs, according to a new report.
Figures complied by London Economics, on behalf of Universities UK (UUK), show the region's higher education institutions make a £4.7billion contribution and support 33,200 full-time equivalent jobs.
However, UUK has said there is a "pressing need" to reform how universities are supported in order to sustain their economic impact as they contend with challenges including a £1billion funding hole in domestic student tuition fees and the pressures created by the cost-of-living crisis. According to the report, Greater Manchester is behind the West Midlands (£6.4billion) and Cambridgeshire and Peterborough (£5billion).
Universities in the Liverpool City Region contribute £2.7billion to the local economy and support 18,9000 full-time equivalent jobs.
