Supermarket remains third cheapest behind Lidl and Aldi as retailers hike price of same budget essential

We're told food price rises are beginning to slow down, but the last week alone has seen the same item increased at three supermarkets.

Tesco, Aldi, Sainsbury's have added 10p onto the cost of their cheapest teabags, an increase of 7%. And it comes just a week after the latter two, along with Lidl, hiked the price of bread too.

Despite the rises, our weekly comparison of the main six supermarkets shows that Lidl remains the cheapest of all, with a bill of £11.79 for the basket of eight items. Read more: Join the FREE Manchester Evening News WhatsApp community As well as bread and tea bags, our comparison has tracked the price of coffee, mince, chicken, beans, butter and a two-pint bottle of milk since last March.

For the second week running, Tesco (£12.31), is now third cheapest behind budget retailers Lidl and Aldi (£12.13) - and the only one to keep its cheapest loaf at the lower price of 39p.
