Plans to develop social housing on the grounds of an A-listed church in Lanark town centre have been refused.Councillors on this week’s planning committee (May 28) knocked back plans to develop three blocks of flats with a total of 39 homes on the grounds of St Mary’s Church due to a number of unacceptable factors in layout and design with the plans.Although council officials and elected members agreed that there is a grave need, the location identified by proposers was unacceptable for this development due to a number of concerns.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

A detached double garage on the site was earmarked for demolition and would make way for the blocks.Blocks one and two would be situated to the front of the site facing onto Ladyacre Road, with three flats on each floor – each block would comprise four storeys, totalling 12 flats per block, all of which would be two bedrooms.The block situated to the rear of the site, block three, would be arranged over three stories, totalling 15 flats, and this would be a mix of three three-bedroom flats and 12 two-bedroom flats.Site access was proposed to be taken from Ladyacre Road, and a total of 28 parking spaces
