A young athlete from the region has been named Scottish Orienteering’s Young Orienteer of the Year. Isla O’Donoghue, from Dalbeattie, along with a fellow first year student at Aberdeen University, re-introduced orienteering to students and Isla qualified as a coach, building a following to make sure the sport is available for the students on an ongoing basis.

The club would like to congratulate Isla and Charlotte on the award. Cows and calves meant last week’s competition moved from Hills Wood to Castledykes Park.

The small, enclosed but intricate area posed a problem for course setter Tim O’Donoghue. He solved it by adding arithmetic problems to navigation options.

The medium length course asked runners to visit controls in ascending or descending order while runners tackling the longer course were asked to visit control points in groups of three numerically – all to be done in 35 minutes without penalty.
