Strictly star Shirley Ballas, 63, has shared on social media a conversation she had with her mother in which she discussed how much sugar they both eat, and how she has been warned by doctors to take care with her diet. The ballroom dancer and judge from Wallasey is having lunch with her mum Audrey and says to her: “I think we need to cut down on sugar in this house, you eat far too much cake.” Audrey replies: “I like cake,” and she adds that she has two sugars in her coffee and used to eat sugar butties as a child.

Shirley’s mum, who is 87, clearly doesn’t fancy changing her diet, but Shirley reveals that “I have to go gluten free, that’s what the doctor says, and I have to cut the sugar because that might be what’s giving me a rash.” Shirley goes on to tell her mum that “sugar’s not good for you,” but her mum laughs and cheekily replies: “sugar gives you energy." The Strictly Come Dancing judge recently teased what to expect of the new season of the dancing show which is due to return later this year, including an “off the chart” line up of celebrities to celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary. “The celebrities will be announced, I believe July,” the 63-year-old said on Saturday 22 June’s episode of Katie Piper ’s Breakfast Show. “I think it’s coming up rather soon. “It’s going to be absolutely off the chart,” the judge teased. “Just when you think the show can’t get any better, it does.

We’ve got a great professional line-up, of course, Tess and Claudia are back,” she continued. The BBC show will be celebrating it’s 20th series this winter without the presence of dance professional Giovanni Pernice, who left the show after nine years following complaints about his approach to training on the show from former celebrity.
