The number of people seeking work and claiming benefits in Dumfries and Galloway has dropped sharply. Figures released by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) show 2,470 jobless in January – 700 fewer than 12 months ago.

However, the decline is not evenly spread across all age groups with the young finding it most difficult to find meaningful employment.

A total of 425 people aged between 18 and 24 were searching for work – just 15 fewer than in January 2022. By contrast, the number of claimants aged over 50 fell to 680, which is 290 down from a year ago.

Longer term the downward trend is reversed which indicates the negative impact of the pandemic on the economy. For example, the latest claimant figure is 52 per cent higher compared with the same month in 2018.
