Shamima Begum is waiting to hear if she has won her appeal against the removal of her British citizenship. Ms Begum went to Syria in 2015 when she was just 15 years old and her British citizenship was taken away for reasons of national security after she was found in a Syrian refugee camp in February 2019.

Last year, Ms Begum, who is now 24, lost a challenge against this decision at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC).

Her lawyers have tried to overturn this decision at the Court of Appeal, but the Home Office is fighting against it. Three judges are set to give their decision on Ms Begum's appeal on Friday. She said in written submissions: "The appellant's trafficking was a mandatory, relevant consideration in determining whether it was conducive to the public good and proportionate to deprive her of citizenship, but it was not considered by the Home Office. "As a consequence, the deprivation decision was unlawful." However, Sir James Eadie KC, speaking for the department, said that decisions over whether someone is a victim of trafficking or whether they should lose their citizenship "have fundamentally different bases and roles".
