Callum Fordyce hailed Airdrie’s achievement in reaching their first final for 16 years – and then challenged them to showcase just how good they are against Hearts in the Scottish Cup fifth round this weekend. The Diamonds defeated Raith Rovers 1-0 at Stark’s Park on Friday night to book their place in next month’s SPFL Trust Trophy final against Welsh side The New Saints, courtesy of an early strike from in-form Nikolay Todorov.Fordyce now has his sights set on the silverware and hopes his side can ride on the crest of that wave when they take on the Jambos in another huge cup clash in front of the live BBC cameras on Sunday evening. After leading the club to their first final since winning the Trust Trophy in 2008 when they defeated Ross County in extra-time, Fordyce said: “It is a great achievement for the players.

They deserve it.“There has been a lot of hard work on the training park and it is massive for us.“It is a chance to win silverware and players can play 20 years in their career and not get their hands on a trophy, so to have that opportunity now is something we will look forward to.

It is a rare thing. I have been there and done it with Livingston [in 2016] and it was a great spectacle for the fans.“There are a lot of people that are associated with the club who haven’t been to a final as well.“But we’ve got plenty of time until then and a lot to focus on before then.“The Hearts game is massive as well.

The boys will be full of confidence going into Sunday and confidence is massive in football.“Reaching the final keeps the momentum rolling for us.
