Activists from the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) disrupted Victoria Beckham’s show at Paris Fashion Week. The BBC reports that demonstrators joined Beckham’s models on the catwalk, wearing T-shirts that read “Animals aren’t fabric” and waved signs reading “Viva vegan leather.” Beckham’s own fashion brand does not use fur or exotic skins, but PETA were protesting against the designer’s use of leather.
The BBC quotes PETA’s European president Mimi Bekhechi saying: “No garment or accessory is worth violently slaughtering and skinning a sensitive and intelligent animal. “We are urging Victoria Beckham to turn instead to the ethical and eco-friendly innovations available today, such as high-end leather made from apples, grapes, pineapples, mushrooms and more.” Beckham appeared unfazed by the protest, taking to the catwalk at the end of the show with crutches and a black protective boot on her left foot, following an injury sustained at the gym.
She was supported at the show by members of her family including her husband, recent Netflix documentary subject David, and other high-profile figures including former Brazilian international footballer Ronaldo, who previously played alongside David Beckham at Real Madrid.
PETA are no strangers to the catwalk – their previous protests this season include events in New York, London and Milan. By providing your information, you agree to our Terms of Use and our Privacy Policy.
