A “little legend” who had two major spinal operations in a year has made an incredible recovery after emergency surgery.Harvey Martin was discharged from the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh six days after his operation.

The 11-year-old said: “I would like to thank Dr Enrique Garrido, the spinal team and all the nurses who work on Creighton and Dunvegan wards for all their encouragement and believing I could smash it out the park.”The youngster, who had to appeal to former first minister Nicola Sturgeon through the Daily Record to get his first operation, had his surgery a week ago.

He had been languishing on a waiting list for surgery to straighten his spine, which was crushing his organs and causing him excruciating pain.By the time of last year’s operation, his fourth and fifth ribs were 2mm from his spinal cord, which would have led to paralysis.

Harvey suffers from neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition that causes growths on the nervous system. The growths caused scoliosis and the spinal curve kept worsening.
