Renfrewshire coach named ‘local legend’ after 50 years service to football team

A Renfrewshire coach has received the accolade of ‘local legend’ as part of Specsavers’ partnership with the Scottish FA.The local legends campaign aims to shine a light on the unsung heroes dedicated to grassroots football.Mick McConville, from Renfrew, was recognised for his work with Erskine Youth Football Club having been instrumental in its development for nearly 50 years as both a coach and, more recently, a custodian.Speaking upon receiving the award, Mick said: “It’s a real pleasure to be recognised in this way, but it’s not about awards.

I do this for the love of the game and to give back to local kids.“For my colleagues and fellow coaches to put me forward for this type of recognition, it’s very humbling and a reminder of the good work we’re doing.”The 71-year-old former panel beater helped bring through the likes of former Celtic star Brian O’Neil and current St Mirren CEO Keith Lasley and is currently leading upgrades to the club’s pavilion at Bargarran.
