Private landlords mount legal battle against Scottish Government over rent freeze and eviction ban

Private landlords are mounting a legal offensive against the Scottish Government over a rent rise cap. The Scottish Association of Landlords yesterday (Friday) submitted a petition for a Judicial Review of a decision to peg rent rises at three percent and maintain an eviction ban.

The SAL had hoped to persuade Scotland’s tenants’ rights minister Patrick Harvie to soften on plans to allow just a three per cent increase in rents.

But the minister held firm by announcing that the cap will be in place until September at the earliest, to protect tenants during the cost of living crisis.

John Blackwood, chief executive of the Scottish Association of Landlords (SAL), said: “Landlords selling up loss making property is further reducing housing supply, despite ever increasing demand.
