Prince Harry has finally spilled the beans on how he ended up with the rather harsh nickname 'spare'. Royal enthusiasts around the globe were taken aback by this moniker for the Duke of Sussex, and now he's revealed its origins.
In a recently unearthed snippet from his book, Prince Harry delves into his relationship with his father, King Charles, disclosing that it was actually his dad who coined the nickname in response to Princess Diana giving birth to a second son.
Harry recalls his father's words as: "Wonderful! Now you've given me an heir and a spare - my work is done." The Guardian newspaper highlighted that Prince Harry has always harboured resentment towards his nickname, a sentiment he expressed in his memoir.The paper stated: "Harry's resentment of being the 'spare' is the underlying theme of his book, through chapters on his childhood, his schooling, his career as a royal and in the British Army, his relationship with his parents and brother, and his life with Meghan through courtship, wedding and marriage, to their own experience of parenthood." Earlier this month, Prince Harry celebrated his 40th birthday - however, the Duke reportedly 'spends most of his time thinking about the past'.
A confidant told The Times last week: "I think he misses being over here [in Britain] desperately and wants to be admired more.
