Pilots have described the terrifying moment they 'hit a wall of rain' as they tried to land at Manchester Airport during a thunderstorm.

The TUI flight from Zakynthos in Greece was forced to divert to Newcastle after the pilot and co-pilot lost suddenly sight of the runway as they made their descent.

In a serious incident report into the last-ditch aborted landing, the pilots described it 'all going black outside' as they hit a band of torrential rain while coming into land on June 12 last year.

But as they attempted to pull the Boeing 737 out of the descent a 'sudden loss of headwind' meant the plane's speed began 'rapidly reducing'.
