People over State Pension age must claim £600 heating bill help before end of this month

People over State Pension age who did not receive a Winter Fuel Payment automatically before the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) payment window closed on January 26 have until the end of this month to make a claim for up to £600 in heating bill help.

This year’s 2023/24 Winter Fuel Payment included the £300 pensioner cost of living payment and the DWP confirmed before Christmas that 11.9 million payments - worth over £4.8 billion - had been made, accounting for some 99 per cent of all payments expected to arrive.

However, anyone who did not get the lump sum and thinks they should have, must contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre on 0800 731 0160 as they may need to make a claim before the deadline on March 31, 2024.Older people may need to claim if they have never received a Winter Fuel Payment before, live abroad, or receive Adult Disability Payment.The majority of pensioners should have received their payment automatically before January 26, but some people may need to claim.
