As parents, we all strive to ensure our children's safety and wellbeing. However, experts are warning about a common parenting practice that can lead to a painful injury - lifting children by their arms.

This injury, known as "nursemaid's elbow", happens when the child's elbow partially dislocates from the joint. It's an unfortunately frequent injury, with studies showing an annual incidence of 2.7 to 4.3 cases per 1,000 children.

The reason it occurs so often is due to the anatomy of a child's elbow joint. In early childhood, the ligaments and bones are still developing, making the elbow joint more susceptible to subluxation, or partial dislocation.

Lifting a child by grabbing their arms is one of the main causes of nursemaid's elbow, as the sudden pull on the arm can cause the ligament to slip out of place.
