The epic tree planting project which was set up by a group of eco conscious Outlander fans has now reached its fourth year.Project CaiTREENa was started in 2020 by a group of die hard followers of the smash hit time-travelling drama set in Scotland, to mark lead actress Caitriona Balfe’s birthday. The initiative has gone from strength to strength and now has thousands of participants worldwide - who will be sure to be busy today as the Claire Fraser star celebrates her 44th birthday.Originally looking to target just one tree for every year on the Irish former model’s 41st birthday in October, the scheme has now seen an incredible 150,000 trees planted as part of a global 'Balforest’.The dreamchild of a group of 15 female fans, members come from far flung locations including Germany, the US and Brazil. They got together to create the @projcaitreena Twitter account, in a bid to do some good and show their appreciation of the Dublin-born actress, who is known for her passion for environmental issues. The women met over social media during the pandemic and they have welcomed many more fans - and some of Caitriona’s co-stars - have since joined, helping boost their forrest from 410 trees to more than 150,000.Teaming up with non-profit environmental tree planting charity One Tree Planted, every dollar donated by the group meant a new tree.Soon the word was spreading, thanks to the efforts of the likes of Scots star Sam Heughan, thousands of fans joined in to pledge and donate their own trees.

Caitriona has thanked the group herself in the past, when she tweeted last year: "A special thanks to these ladies who started this project CaiTREEna.
