Manchester's new traffic powers which could see drivers fined over £100

A series of new traffic safety measures are set to be installed across Manchester - which could see drivers fined over £100.

Manchester Council have been granted powers to administer Moving Traffic Contraventions (MTCs), something only the police could previously enforce.

A package of measures will be brought in that include clearing up traffic congestion and making roads safer for those walking or cycling. READ MORE: First look at latest city centre development in huge plans for 15,000 homes READ MORE: Today's top Manchester Evening News stories From mid-November, Drivers who break the MTCs will be fined £70 which will be reduced to £35 if it is paid within 21 days, however, if the fine hasn’t been paid in 28 days, it will rise to £105.

Drivers will be fined for making illegal right or left turns, and those who block yellow boxes at junctions, through the use of ANPR (automatic number-plate recognition).
