The Royal College of Nursing has announced its biggest walkout by staff amid the ongoing pay dispute in England. Members are to stage a 48-hour walkout, running continuously from 6am on March 1.

The college, which accused the UK government of refusing to engage in negotiations, also said it will increase financial support for its members who lose wages by taking industrial action.

Previous action only took place during the day shift, for 12 hours each time. For the first time, the RCN will now involve nursing staff working in key areas, such as emergency departments, intensive care units, cancer care and other services that were previously exempt.

Locally, the North West Ambulance Service Trust, the Wrightington Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust will be impacted.
