Monty Don is warning people with hedges to stick to two important rules to avoid ruining them. According to the gardening expert, up until a decade ago, box hedges and topiary were pretty common in most gardens.

However, the emergence of box blight and the box moth caterpillar - a fungal disease and type of species - has put the garden feature at "significant risk".This has resulted in fewer and fewer people being able to successfully grow them.

However if you have a hedge, you can do two things this month to keep it looking good with June being the perfect time to give it a trim.

This includes using the correct tool, and waiting for the right weather.Talking about hedges, the author who penned The Gardening Book: Monty Don, cautioned: "Always use really sharp shears or hedge trimmer as this will avoid burning and tearing the cut edges which makes them turn brown."
