The weather agency has issued an amber warning for rain covering parts of the north west of England and North Wales, which will remain in place until noon on Thursday.
Forecasters say some areas could see flooding and some disruption to transport and other services. On X, formerly Twitter, the Met Office posted: "A month's worth of rain may fall within the next 24 hours in some parts of the UK.
Flooding is likely in places so stay weather aware and up to date with the warnings." READ MORE: When the rain is due to stop in Greater Manchester as region braced for 24-hour 'severe' weather warning Weather maps show that some parts of the north west coast of England could see more than 32mm of rain per hour from around 8pm, while parts of Greater Manchester could see up to 16mm of rainfall in an hour.
The Met Office said it will also feel breezy around coastal areas and temperatures will feel lower than they have been recently, with highs of 17C on Wednesday.
