He’s been the club driving force in a marathon 42 year stint at Maybole Juniors.Unassuming Alex Meek, who has been manager, secretary and is now club president, is still playing it for kicks following a medal winning amateur career.

Dubbed Mr Maybole, 78-year-old Alex was honoured with a lifetime achievement award which he reveals caught him on the hop. After receiving an engraved plate from general manager Carlo Walker, Alex admitted: “I was gobsmacked and didn’t have a clue what was planned.“It was great to see so many old faces back for the day and the club did me proud.

I’ve been here a long time after playing for Dalrymple Ams and Vale of Girvan who were very successful. I love it at Maybole and although I’m now president I still get to wash the floors.

The club is in its best ever position and now has U10, U17, U18 and U20 teams affiliated.”‘Bole were unable to make Alex’s big day a winner as they threw away a 2-1 interval lead, courtesy of goals from Roddy Paterson and Robbie McCracken, to lose 3-2 to Shotts who finished with 10 men.
