Martin Lewis has issued a clarifying statement for couples who have been shocked by an "extra tax bill" from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
Generally, married couples can use Marriage Allowance to transfer some of their personal tax allowance to their partner up to £1,260.
According to current government figures, this reduces their tax by up to £252. However, while many couples will do this to reduce their tax, some have instead found that they've been hit by an unexpected surprise tax bill.
Martin explained what the unexpected bill is and why it often happens in the latest episode of the 'Not The Martin Lewis' Podcast'. Read more: HMRC warning as some women claiming Child Benefit could lose money by responding to letter Martin explained: "There can be issues with Marriage Tax Allowance because people don't understand and they transfer their allowance when they shouldn't but some people get in touch with me quite angry and they say 'and I've had this much extra tax bill because I claim Marriage Tax Allowance'.
