Listen to Kim Deal’s woozy new single ‘Coast’

The Breeders singer and guitarist Kim Deal has shared her a new solo single, ‘Coast’.The track is Deal’s first solo release under 4AD and was produced by the late Steve Albini, who died in May.

They recorded the track at Albini’s famed Chicago studio, Electrical Audio.Honing a beachy, summer-inspired soundscape, ‘Coast’ features marching band Mucca Pazza.

Yet despite its brighter elements, the track carries a more subdued message.Deal said the song was inspired by a wedding band she watched cover Jimmy Buffett‘s ‘Margaritaville’, who she described as displaying “revelatory levels of low self-esteem”.Also joining Deal on the track are her twin sister and Breeders’ guitarist Kelley Deal and rhythm section Lindsay Glover and Mando Lopez.‘Coast’ marks Deal’s first solo music since 2014, when she started a 7″ singles series shortly after leaving the Pixies.In 2019, Deal told NME how The Breeders’ 1990 debut album ‘Pod’ inspired Nirvana to work with Albini, saying: “I think they got Steve Albini to record ‘In Utero’ because they really liked ‘Pod’.“I remember Dave Grohl saying he really liked the drum sound, but I always felt bad for Dave because the drum sound for ‘Pod’ sounds huge because there’s so much empty space for the drums to ring out.

Poor Dave had all these guitars and bass playing all the way through.”In 2022, Grohl joined Deal on stage at a charity concert to perform a cover of Pixies‘ classic ‘Gigantic’.Earlier this year, Breeders joined Olivia Rodrigo on her ‘Guts’ world tour..
