New internet safety laws that have been years in the making could come into force as soon as this week. The chief executive of Ofcom said she expects the Online Safety Bill to receive royal assent tomorrow.
The new UK laws, which will be regulated by Ofcom, will place new duties on social media platforms to protect users from harmful content.
Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok will be made responsible for the content they host and will have a duty to prevent and remove illegal content from appearing on their sites.
Technology secretary Michelle Donelan has described the new law as a 'game-changer' and said it takes the UK a step further towards becoming the 'safest place in the world to be online'. The reforms are being brought in to address widespread concerns around youngsters accessing pornographic content, child sexual abuse on the internet and the damaging impact of harmful material on social media, which has contributed to recent cases of suicide in young people.
