Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large For three seasons, HBO/Max’s “How To With John Wilson” chronicled the quirks, mysteries and sometimes just plain mundane aspects of living in New York. “Quirky, mysterious and mundane” might also be a way to describe Hollywood’s awards seasons — so it’s perhaps so surprise that Wilson has a take on it all.
Just in time for the start of Emmy Phase 2 voting, Wilson cut together his primer on what it’s like to hit the awkward Emmy campaign trail. (Watch his “How To Emmy” video above.) He’s seen it up close, of course: “How To With John Wilson” is nominated for two Emmys this year, for outstanding hosted nonfiction series or special and for outstanding writing for a nonfiction program (for which it also received a nom in 2022).
Among the things Wilson hit: Food and lines at FYC events, outdoor marketing and one on one campaigning. Also, “The Sopranos” alum Michael Imperioli showed up in Wilson’s short to explain why the wing on his statuette is clipped. “You see the edge of this wing,” Imperioli explained. “This was clipped, and a piece of it was given to a shaman who made these treasure vases for world peace.
They asked for all kinds of different materials, and they wanted any kind of important awards. So we clipped it and sent it to him.
