An emotional Jack Carlin admitted he’d endured the toughest 48 hours of his career to claim sprint bronze for GB on another day of drama at the velodrome. The Paisley flyer was booed on the podium by sections of Dutchman Jeffrey Hoogland’s support after emerging victorious from a third race restart for the second day running.
His was the second GB and Scottish medal on the track in a matter of minutes after Neah Evans claimed silver along with partner Elinor Barker in the women's’ madison.Evans later revealed she’d only beaten a bout of Epstein Barr virus that left her unable to climb flight of stairs four months before heading to Paris.
But it was Carlin who was the hottest story of the day after another sprint session full of controversy. The Scot eventually took the bronze medal after he had held his hands up to the incident which saw him crash into Hoogland as he tried to pass.Dutch officials asked the question of officials but were told the restart was fair.
Incredibly the Scot had been involved in two restarts for infringements - one his own fault the other the fault of Ota Kaiya - which had left the Japanese rider in tears on Thursday. But it was Carlin who was overcome with emotion last night.
