During this morning's BBC Breakfast, Charlie Stayt left his co-host exasperated when an awkward blunder led him to offer his microphone to a hen.

The moment happened during a conversation about bird safety with the British Hen Welfare Trust volunteer, Adele Hall. She was on the show with Agatha, an ex-commercial hen who appeared quite at ease throughout the chat.

Seeking to reassure those watching that the hen was comfortable, Stayt asked Adele: "Can we do the welfare thing, because people might be thinking 'Hen in a TV studio?

In these environments?'. How is she? She seems very calm." Adele confirmed that Agatha was indeed "very calm" and went on to describe hens as "cats and dogs with feathers" noting that they could even purr, which Agatha had done before. "They purr?" asked an astonished co-host Rachel Burden, to which Stayt interjected, "I didn't know whether you were joking or not." Stayt then wondered aloud if Agatha's purring could be heard if everyone went quiet, and opted to investigate by saying, "I tell you what, shall I put my microphone..." However, the guest warned, "She's not purring at the moment, I think she's a bit over faced," just as Stayt detached his lapel mic, leaned in and held it up to the hen in a silent studio, reports the Express.
