The closure of a unique, historic bridge has left elderly and disabled people unable to access one of Manchester's beauty spots, campaigners have warned.
The Bailey Bridge, which runs over the River Mersey in Chorlton, was closed by Manchester Council earlier this year. The bridge links Chorlton Water Park to Kenworthy Woods, and the Chorlton Park ward to the Northenden ward.
The council closed the bridge in February, citing 'health and safety reasons'. Lee Ann Igbon, the council's executive member for vibrant neighbourhoods, previously told the M.E.N: "Bailey Bridge, the main link between Chorlton Water Park and Kenworthy Woods, has had to be closed at short notice for health and safety reasons. This is a busy and popular route and we are looking at potential long term solutions, as significant work will be required. In the meantime we are exploring short term temporary options to restore limited access to the bridge." However, months later the bridge remains closed and campaigners claim they are being kept in the dark as to a timescale for the bridge's repair, or when a temporary solution might be put in place.
