Councillors have approved plans to build more than 2,000 homes in the Hyde green belt despite thousands of objections from campaigners who asked whether the land was ‘precious’ or a ‘cash cow’.
Nine of the ten members of Tameside’s planning panel backed the Godley Green Garden Village application, which will now progress to the Secretary of State for final sign off.
The proposal, which was first included in the draft Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF) masterplan in 2016, will see up to 2,150 homes built on countryside and pastureland north of Mottram Old Road over a 15 year period.
The development will be split by Godley Brook across two east and west villages, each with their own ‘local centres’ which would include up to 1,300 sqm of retail, 1,600 sqm of commercial uses and 1,000 sqm of local community uses.
