The director of Interview With a Vampire opened up about the initial blowback he received after casting Tom Cruise in the classic movie.
If you forgot, Tom appeared alongside Brad Pitt in the 1994 project. However, there had been a push for Daniel Day-Lewis to land the role and a belief that Tom was not the correct choice.
While Tom‘s performance was later praised, it was not without drama. Director Neil Jordan reflected on the casting decision in an interview and in an excerpt from his memoir.
In the process, he provided some additional insight into the situation. Keep reading to find out more… In an except of his memoir published by The Telegraph, Neil explained that everyone, including Brad seemed to believe that Daniel would be playing Lestat. “The problem was the casting of Lestat. Brad Pitt had agreed to play Louis and somehow assumed Daniel Day-Lewis would be playing Lestat, an assumption shared by Anne [Rice, who wrote the source material],” he said. “I offered it to Daniel, who read it, and, as I expected, didn’t want to play the character.” Neil explained that he did not think the actor would be interested in being confined in a coffin after filming My Left Foot in a wheelchair.
