Illuminating notes and WhatsApp messages were revealed at the Covid inquiry yesterday (October 30). They ranged from dismay at the Prime Minister's indecisiveness, to concern over plans for a leaving do for a Downing Street staffer.
The messages show chaos at the heart of Government, during the biggest crisis to hit the UK since the Second World War. For the British public, one of the first clear signs all was not well in Downing Street during the pandemic was Mr Cummings' trip to Barnard Castle, which hit headlines in May 2020.
A WhatsApp conversation between former Cabinet Secretary Mark Sedwill and then-principal private secretary Martin Reynolds revealed it was feared how the public would react 'outside the [Westminster] bubble'.
