With our notoriously unpredictable British summer in full swing — one day there’s a searing heatwave, and the next, a Biblical downpour — it looks like the best fake tans might be our most reached-for beauty products over the coming months.

And if you’re planning on escaping the UK by heading off on holiday, this is one time when you want your tan to be spot-on.There’s little opportunity to hide unexpected streaks or missed bits when you’re wearing a swimsuit.

But it’s also the trickiest time to get fake tan right. Apply it too far in advance and you risk it disappearing by day two of your holiday, while the dips in the pool can leave you returning home patchier and pastier than when you left.

We asked the experts to answer your top tanning questions for a flawless glow while travelling... How long before going on holiday should I use fake tan? “Apply your tan a day in advance, and exfoliate and shave at least four hours prior to applying it,” says James Read, celebrity tanning expert and founder of new sunless tanning range, Self Glow by James Read. “Most tans take 24 hours to really develop, so this will be perfect timing for when you arrive.” How do I get an even tan on my hands and feet? “Always apply a good moisturiser to your hands, elbows, knees, feet and ankles beforehand,” says Vogue Williams, TV presenter, podcaster and founder of Bare By Vogue. “It’s super important and makes it much easier to blend in your tan.” We also like to massage a little moisturiser into these troublesome areas after we tan too, for the most seamless finish.
