An SNP councillor is donating his stem cells to try and save a life. Connor McManus, 24, signed up to the Anthony Nolan stem cell charity registry around three years ago and in June he was found to be a match for someone who was gravely ill with blood cancer.

Councillor McManus was asked to undergo several tests this week at The London Clinic, who work in partnership with the charity, and learned he was fit enough to proceed.

Next, he will travel back down south to donate his cells on September 25, reports Edinburgh Live. The patient Cllr McManus is helping is currently too ill to undergo the procedure but the stem cells will be frozen until they able to start the treatment. He decided to help after seeing people in his family fight blood cancer, and hopes that his story will encourage others to sign up to help people battling conditions such as lymphoma and leukaemia.Councillor McManus said: “The first half of the donation process was yesterday (September 6) and that was just to make sure I am healthy enough and everything is ok so that they can get the stem cells they need.“I will then go through with the donation day at the end of the month.
