Hero dad pulled woman to safety from rubble of fatal Edinburgh house explosion

A hero dad helped pull a woman to safety after a deadly explosion that destroyed an Edinburgh home.Emergency services raced to Baberton Mains Avenue at around 10.25pm on Friday, December 1 after multiple reports of an explosion.

It was later revealed that an 84-year old man had died following the blast.Two people were rescued from the ruins before crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service arrived, and they are now being treated in hospital.A 43-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man were taken to hospital but their condition is unknown.

Police said there are no suspicious circumstances.One of those who raced into danger to help was local resident Ross Aitchison, who worked with another local to pull a woman out of the rubble.Ross' son, Ben, told Edinburgh Live: "Around 10.26pm last night I got a phone call from my dad saying 'did you hear that big bang?'"I replied no, I didn’t hear anything at all.

He then said a house has just exploded from a gas leak so I say to him I will run over and check. My dad only stays 20-30 seconds from where the incident happened so he was one of the first people there."By the time I got to where he was he had already got the woman out the house with another person's help and luckily she was still alive."Ross added: "Both are safe and away to hospital.
