'Henry's is the place to be, for a casual fling or a serious affair': Revealing stories from a lost Manchester bar
manchestereveningnews.co.ukA pioneer of Manchester's nightlife, Henry's Cafe Bar promised to add a little 'excitement' to the lives of its customers. The upmarket bar on the corner of Parsonage Gardens, behind Kendals department store, was an instant hit when it opened in 1986.
Its large glass windows tantalised curious onlookers to the plush surroundings and goings on inside, in contrast to the dark glass of pubs designed to prevent people seeing in.
Modelled in the Continental style, Henry's bar sold food all day, offering good coffee as well as alcohol. It was a mecca for '80s 'yuppies' and celebrities, and became one of the best places to be seen in Manchester.
It's been suggested it was also the first bar to be aimed specifically at women and reaped the reward of recognising the power of the female pound.
