Rishi Sunak has announced that the UK will head to the polls in a general election on July 4. The prime minister had repeatedly insisted the vote would take place in the 'second half of this year' amid months of speculation over when polling day would take place, with many analysists believing he would hold off until the autumn.
The announcement comes as Sir Keir Starmer's Labour Party maintains its double-digit lead in opinion polls. As of May 19, Labour led the polls on 44 points, with the Tories behind on 24 points, according to analysis by the PA news agency. When Mr Sunak took over the party in October 2022, the Tories managed to narrow slightly the large gap made by Liz Truss's premiership, but Labour has maintained a lead of at least 10 points ahead.
Earlier this month, the Tories suffered major losses in the local elections, losing nearly 500 council seats, the West Midlands mayoral race and the Blackpool South by-election.
