Hundreds of schools across the UK may need to close due to potentially dangerous building materials. The Department for Education (DfE) said 104 schools have been recorded as containing Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC).

The concern over the risk from the material means that schools will either have to close off parts of a building or the entire school while repair works are made.

It comes after a 'loss of confidence in buildings containing the material' already led to 56 schools being repaired. The government has been criticised for refusing to release a full list of the schools that will be affected by the RAAC closures in the run-up to the start of the new school term.
